Questions, answered.
Tables, seats, waiting lists, guests and cancelling: how the club works, in plain words. Every time is Spain time.
The club
What is the Costa del Sol Board Game Social Club?
A small, private club for board games, played in English, for people who have made the Costa del Sol their home. Members choose a game from the owner's collection, open a table for it at an evening or join someone else's, and the host runs hosted tables alongside.
Is the club open yet?
Not yet. The members area is open for sign-in, but evenings are not dated and venues are not set. To be told when the first evening is dated, request a place. A request is not a booking and not a payment.
Where and how often are the evenings?
Two evenings a month are planned: the first in Marbella, the second in Estepona. More often only if the list is long. The club looks for rooms of the standard of a five-star hotel or a seafront restaurant; the room explains the standard. No venue is booked yet.
Is everything played in English?
Yes. Every game is played in English at the table, whatever the language of the box, including games a member brings.
Is it a board game café or a library?
Neither. There is no shop and nothing is for sale. The games belong to the owner and are never lent or taken home: they arrive with the host and leave with the host.
Tables and seats
How do I get a seat at a table?
In the members area. Pick a game from the shelf and open a table for it at an evening, or join a table another member has opened. Each table shows the seats taken, the seats free and how many more players it needs.
How many players does a table need to go ahead?
The game's minimum number of players, and never fewer than two. A table is confirmed as soon as it reaches that minimum; below it, the table shows as needing players.
What happens if my table does not fill?
Seats settle at noon two days before the evening, Spain time. A table that is still short has until 18:00 that day. If it is still short then, it does not go ahead: its players are offered a seat at a hosted table where there is room, or the table is cancelled. No penalty applies either way.
Can the game at a table change?
The member who opened the table may change the game until noon three days before the evening. After that, a change needs a vote of the seated players, and anyone who does not want the new game may leave without penalty.
What happens when a table is full?
You can join its waiting list. Names wait in order. When a seat is released it goes straight to the first name waiting, who is told. If the whole room is at capacity, you can still join a waiting list.
How many seats can I take at an evening?
One seat per member per evening. You can move to another table with a free seat until the evening starts; your old seat goes to the next name waiting.
Can I book a whole table for my own group?
Yes. Open it as a group table. It is not listed for joining; your players join through a private link that stops working when seats settle. If the group is short, the spare seats can be opened to members.
What are hosted tables?
Tables the host runs at every evening, alongside the member tables. The host sets out the game, teaches the rules and keeps time. Players from a table that did not fill can join one where there is room.
What do New to it, Played it and Know it well mean?
How a table will be played, chosen by the member who opens it. New to it: rules taught from the start. Played it: a short reminder, then play. Know it well: straight in, at full pace. It describes the table, not the people at it; any member can join any table.
Cancelling
Can I cancel my seat?
Yes. Leaving a table before seats settle, at noon two days before the evening, is free. Release your seat as early as you can, so the next name waiting gets it.
What is a late cancel?
Leaving a table that is going ahead after seats have settled. It adds one attendance point; not coming at all adds more. Points expire after six months, and enough of them pause booking for one evening. If your table's game changes or the club moves you, you may leave without penalty for a set time, shown on the table.
Membership and guests
What are the membership levels?
Two levels. A seat: book a seat at any table with a free chair. The Reserved Table: a chair held for you, a longer or rarer game, one drink and a small plate served away from the board, and up to two guests of your own at an evening. A free account can look around the members area but cannot book. Either level has one month's notice to leave.
How much does membership cost?
Prices are shared with the list before the club opens. Nothing is charged until then, and nothing on this site takes a payment.
Can I bring a guest?
Guests are part of Reserved Table membership. A Reserved Table member may bring up to two guests to an evening, seated at the member's own table and only if a chair is free. The member who invites a guest is responsible for them. There is no drop-in.
How often can someone come as a guest?
A guest may come three times in six months (182 days). After that, membership is the next step.
How do I sign in to the members area?
At app.costadelsolboardgamesocial.club, with a passkey or a six-digit code sent to your email.
At the table
Can I bring my own game?
Now and then, yes. A member may bring a game of their own and play it with others at an evening. The shelf and the hosted tables come first, and a game you bring follows the same house rules.
Can I eat and drink at the table?
Drinks, yes, but off the board: glasses go on a side table or the bar. Food stays away from the games; a small plate is eaten at the bar or a side table.
Do I need to know the rules before I come?
No. Choose or join a table marked New to it, or a hosted table, and the rules are taught from the start. Each game page on the shelf has a short account of how it plays.
