The feel of it

Why it lands at the table

Daimyo is set in a Japan after a collapse, where four clans, Nature, Tech, Nomad and Noble, compete to restore the empire across a set of islands. Each clan has its own board and its own way of growing.

The heart of it is a shared pool of coloured dice rolled at the start of each round. Players take turns drafting them: the colour decides which action a die can power, the number decides which hero cards it can wake. A good draft feels like solving a small puzzle that the other players keep changing.

Over five rounds your clan board fills with buildings and bonus tiles, and turns begin to chain into each other. The satisfying moment is a round where three dice add up past thirteen, your clan ability fires and a hero card lands exactly on the number you needed.

The rules, briefly

How it plays

  1. 01

At the start of each round, roll the action dice and line them up by value.

  2. 02

In turn, draft one die and place it on a matching colour space of your clan board to take that action; any colour can go to tax.

  3. 03

Use the die values to activate hero cards, which you buy and cycle through a small deck.

  4. 04

If your three dice total thirteen or more, your clan ability triggers.

  5. 05

After five rounds, the player with the most popularity points wins.
