Why it lands at the table
King of New York is Richard Garfield's follow-up to King of Tokyo. Each player is a giant monster stomping through the boroughs of New York, and the city fights back.
Turns are short and loud: roll the dice up to three times, keep what you like, and see what comes up. Claws hit other monsters, hearts heal, energy buys power cards, and the buildings you knock down bring in points but also call in the army.
The memorable part is Manhattan. Holding it scores well and lets you hit everyone else, but it also makes you the target. Groups end up laughing at the moment someone stays one turn too long.
How it plays
- 01
Roll six dice up to three times, keeping any you want between rolls.
- 02
Resolve the faces: attack, heal, gain energy, destroy buildings, gain fame or face the army.
- 03
Spend energy on power cards that bend the rules for your monster.
- 04
Move into Manhattan for points, and take hits for staying there.
- 05
Win with 20 victory points or by being the last monster standing.
Good for
- A loud, quick opener for four to six
- Players new to board games
- An evening that needs a laugh between longer games
