The feel of it

Why it lands at the table

Exploding Kittens is a short card game from the creator of The Oatmeal. The deck holds a few exploding kittens; draw one and you are out, unless you have a defuse card.

That simple threat makes every draw a small event. Players peek at the top of the deck, skip turns, shuffle, attack the next person, and try to make someone else take the bad card. The art is silly and the rules fit on a single sheet.

It plays in about fifteen minutes and the table is rarely quiet. The remembered moment is a defuse card played with great ceremony, and the kitten slipped back into the deck exactly where the next player will find it.

The rules, briefly

How it plays

  1. 01

Deal each player a hand and a defuse card, then shuffle the exploding kittens into the deck.

  2. 02

On your turn, play as many cards as you like, or none.

  3. 03

End your turn by drawing a card.

  4. 04

If you draw an exploding kitten, play a defuse and hide it back in the deck, or you are out.

  5. 05

    The last player left wins.
