Why it lands at the table
Expeditions is Jamey Stegmaier's standalone sequel to Scythe, published by Stonemaier Games in 2023. A meteorite has fallen near the Tunguska River, and each player funds an expedition into the taiga.
It is a card-driven engine builder on a board of tiles that are revealed as you explore. Your mech moves, your hand of cards grows, and every turn you choose one of three actions.
For one to five players, sixty to ninety minutes, with a solo mode. The art by Jakub Rozalski does much of the talking.
How it plays
- 01
Each player takes a character, a companion and a mech.
- 02
On your turn, move, act or gather, then take back cards when you rest.
- 03
Reveal map tiles, find artifacts and recruit workers.
- 04
Defeat corruption and complete quests to earn glory.
- 05
When enough glory is claimed, the richest expedition wins.
Good for
- One to five players
- A main game for an evening
- Scythe players who want something smoother
